RM of Victory’s story
The Rural Municipality of Victory No. 226 was incorporated on December 8, 1919, but its story starts a little earlier. The first settlers arrived in the early 1900s, and by the summer of 1908 a band of them had established the community of Demaine. With no nearby source of supplies, they hauled everything from the Riverhurst area to the east and across the South Saskatchewan River.
Those first settlers were farmers who began growing grain, working the land with teams of oxen and mules before modern farm machinery came along. Over time two larger settlements took shape, and they grew into the Village of Beechy and the Organized Hamlet of Demaine. The RM office is in Beechy.
Farming is still the heart of the local economy, mainly grain with some livestock ranching. Prairie Lake Regional Park, founded in 1984 on Cruikshank Bay on the north shore of Lake Diefenbaker, offers camping, boating, fishing and swimming. The Matador Grasslands, a protected area of uncultivated clay soils near the South Saskatchewan River, also lie within the area.
